Important Tips for Getting the Best MPLS Service Provider

If you’re looking for technology that’s easy to use and completely state-of-the-art, look no further than MPLS.  But if you want to make the most out of the provider you choose, follow these 5 tips:

1.  Make sure you get your choice of access technology

That’s a fancy way of describing how you actually connect to the MPLS service itself.  You may use a T1 line, an Ethernet connection, a copper line, or something else entirely.  The best part about having this choice, though, is being able to customize your expenses.  A lower-end access technology can make an MPLS service provider suddenly perfect for your budget!

2.  Get the best Quality of Service

MPLS is basically a virtual router.  So, you need an MPLS service provider that can route things in the most efficient way!  By having state-of-the-art Quality of Service, you can specify exactly how your bandwidth is used – which means you’ll get the most bang for your buck.

When you’re comparing different providers, you need to look at their Quality of Service classes – like voice, video, or email.  You can even take it one step further with something like an FTP class.  That way, you can prioritize the data that’s most important to you, and turn your MPLS service into a one-stop shop.

3.  Look for a provider that offers clear communication

Great MPLS service providers offer 24/7 technical support.  And, since your provider will be in charge of all of your equipment, they’ll be in charge of taking care of everything AND keeping you in the loop.

Your communication also needs to extend to scaling your service up and down.  By nature, MPLS service is easy to scale.  So, a good provider will make it easy on you if you want to make any changes.

4.  Make sure you’ve got complete coverage

You don’t need an MPLS service provider that covers every part of the world – just the parts that your employees work in!  Since MPLS service is perfect for connecting from city to city (and, thus, linking together employees that work in different places), you need to make sure that your potential provider can link all of your different offices together.  That way, you’ll be able to connect everyone to the same network, without having to set up a completely different infrastructure in each office.

5.  Sign a contract that suits you

Whether you want to work with your MPLS service provider for the next year or the next 5 years, a good provider will be able to accommodate you.  They may even give you discounts on longer contracts!

Either way, most providers will be willing to negotiate, so feel free to ask for better terms.  The worst they can do is say no!
